About our Tea Bags

I used to assume that all tea bags were compostable, that is to say really, to me, biodegradable. I am not the most eco-conscious person out there, but I would like to take steps to reduce the amount the vassssttt amount of waste I produce each week, especially within the products from my business.

So it was important to me to use materials that don’t add to the amount of materials that are not safe to compost and those that are made with plastics, toxic sealants, or are here to stay on the planet forever. Sadly, there are quite a few varieties of tea bags out there that fit the bill for “not great for the environment.”

According to many sources, fancier silk triangle tea sachets have a lot of benefits for sustained brewing but are not the best for the environment due to the fact that while the herbs inside them will decompose like other natural materials, the bags themselves do not. Other mass commercial brands reinforce their bag materials with plastic and chemicals. Bags are bleached white with things not found in nature.

I use bags from Mountain Rose Herbs, my supplier for most of my organic herbs. Their tea sachets come in multiple sizes, are easy to assemble and seal, and allow me to extend the brand in a way that won’t negatively impact the environment for years to come. Their tea bags are bleached by natural means and are fully compostable.

It’s not much, and it’s certainly not all that I could be doing towards bettering the environment, but it is a start. This is Adornleaf Tea Co. Thanks for reading.
