All About Astringent Herbal Teas

Hey, y’all! I’m back in my bag with shared learning about herbal wellness. As a self-taught herbalist, I am always looking to increase my knowledge about herbs and how I can both use new ones in ATC products but also enrich what I already know about what’s currently in stock. I use a variety of herbal families in my teas and I’ve been getting into learning all about astringents. So what’s their deal?

Ever had a super dry red wine that made your mouth pucker? Astringents can cause a similar sensation, both internally and topically. These effects can be highly beneficial for your health and your day-to-day routine.

✨ABOUT ASTRINGENT HERBS
Astringent herbs directly support your wellness by shrinking, drying, drawing up tissues externally and internally. Herbs in the astringent family provide both nutrients and tannins, and can help several of your body’s systems deal with situations of excess moisture, bloating, and overactivity. They can also be applied topically for both immediate results and long-term results with consistent use.

✨HOW ASTRINGENTS WORK
Many causes of pain or discomfort for us can be due to conditions of excess, whether it’s too much moisture or too much activity. Externally, oily skin, splinters, or minor injuries may bleed excessively or can be prone to infection. Astringents can help you in these situations!

It’s important to note that there are several different types of astringents, and some herbs and flowers may be in multiple herbal families. Be sure to check in with your trusted medical or holistic practitioner before adding any new herbal regimens to your routine.

✨EXAMPLES OF ASTRINGENTS
Many well-known nervine herbs and flowers are astringents, such as raspberry leaf, green tea, black tea, calendula, witch hazel, rose, and nettle.

🌿ASTRINGENT EFFECTS
Astringent herbs can cause body tissues to draw up, providing a barrier or protective effect. Astringents can tone the throat, digestive tract, and stomach membranes. They can help with sore throats, stimulating healthy digestive activity, and ending diarrhea. Astringents can also help with severe bleeding during menstruation and tone the uterine walls to reduce cramping and promote healthy pregnancy and childbirth. Topically, astringents can reduce oily skin, help tone your pores, draw out splinters, and promote wound healing and reduce the likelihood of infection.
