Everything About Elderberries All At Once
Sambucus nigra, or elderberry, as it’s more commonly known, is a super well-known fruit that’s literally EVERYWHERE - in storebought syrups at pharmacies, in gummies, in extracts and tinctures and everywhere in between. In the midst of allergy season, a lingering pandemic, and the daily wellness craze all around us, it seems like everyone is reaching for elderberries in one form or another…and for good reason. The elderberry plant is valuable and easily identifiable from its flowers, its fruits, and its roots, and it is one of the newest base ingredients to one of ATC’s most distinctive teas.
There’s lots to learn about elderberries! Here’s some of the basics.
Elderberries grow on a tree that can grow up to 9 feet tall and are marked by clusters of light-colored flowers called elderflowers.
Elderberries and the various other parts of the plant have been used in folk medicines and culinary applications across the world since at least 400 BC.
The berries must be cooked or dried before consumed and are high in vitamin C, flavanols, phenolic acids, and dietary fiber. They are known for their tart, somewhat deep berry flavor.
Elderberries can reduce inflammation and help ease digestion.
Elderberries are well known to fight allergies as well as boost immune system health, and can also reduce the symptoms of the common cold and flu.

Fresh elderberries or those picked by hand can cause diarrhea and vomiting, and you should exercise caution if you are known to have plant allergies. Read further here.
